sixteen days

it’s crazy to think that in just 16 short days i will be flying to the northwest corner of the country to ride my bike across the country. seriously.

today i had a feature published on the chainlink that i wrote. that’s pretty great.

i keep running into people and people keep asking questions. the most common ones are “aren’t you going on a bike ride or something?” or “i thought you had left already?”. perhaps i didn’t convey everything as well as i could have. the good news is that i still have a few weeks to tell them(if i have time).

time seems to be stretched thinner recently. i’m pushing hard to get things done sooner. when i do that, something falls into the extra time i created. i thought i used to be busy, but now i’m busy. also, i can’t seem to get the tetris theme out of my head.

far better things ahead

i read a quote earlier that someone had posted while they were touring across spain. it became stuck in my head. it seems to fit appropriately to my adventure:

“there are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.”

-c.s. lewis

i’m not really leaving anything behind that i wouldn’t love to see again, but i always look ahead at what can be improved and done better. there are plenty of things that i will miss on my trip. i am also glad that i have the opportunity to do this and go all the way. who knows, maybe there is potential for more rides like this.

thanks to ten speed hero for the amazing jersey that i have. i’ll be wearing the hell out of that while i’m up in the clouds around the peak of a mountain.

route is done

(insert sigh of relief)
i’m done with the route! of course this will probably be adjusted in the along the ride with time, exhaustion, mood, all of that stuff. there’s been a few people that say the two 150 days i have are going to be rough. that’s fine, i can handle a few rough days. i’m so excited and looking forward to this. 24 days until my flight takes off.

bicycle bbq

okay, so it really wasn’t a bicycle bbq. it was more of a handful of cyclists visiting a friend that was introducing her new daughter to them. it was a lot of fun and i was happy to see everyone. the variety of bicycles was great too. i had discussed my theory of potluck dishes with people and hopefully made a few conversions. you see, whenever someone has a potluck everyone wants to bring a side dish. corn, chips, potato salad, potato salad, potato salad, etc. if a few of those potato salad people(or any other common summer dish) decided to bring a main entree dish, the balance would be restored. my dish yesterday? apple cranberry pork roast. moving it and making sure it was hot took a little more planning. i baked it not as recommended, but thoughtfully. about 300 degrees for an hour and a half. it was almost up to temperature, and still juicy. i wrapped it in foil, then a towel, then tossed it in a six pack cooler. when i got there, after about an hour i threw it on the grill and glazed it. everything was fine. lots of compliments about it too. i love cooking.

today i go see the fine folks over at ten speed hero and then i reeeaaallllyyy need to finish my route planning.

a story from a few years ago

as my favorite bike shop made the “best bike shop in chicago” list today, it reminded me of a story i had wrote from a few years ago. here’s that story from september 2nd 2012.

almost two years ago today i had my bike stolen. it was my second bike stolen in chicago, but the first one was about a week old and i never had time to bond with it. this one was different. i had three years of bonding. i grew with the bike.

i lived in a loft with five other people on milwaukee. below that loft was another loft that had some new residents. there was a common area where we could lock our bikes up, rather than carry them all the way to the third floor of the building. there wasn’t a ton of people in and out of the building, and we had just become friends with our only neighbors. i had come back to the loft one night with my girlfriend and we left our bicycles unlocked in the common area downstairs. there were three or four other bicycles down there at the time from my other roommates.

the next morning i went to leave for work and my bicycle wasn’t there. it was gone. the first thing in my head was that i had taken it upstairs. that wasn’t uncommon. i went upstairs and looked. then i asked my roommates. one of my roommates went down to check on his bike, but it wasn’t there either. we looked at the door, but it wasn’t damaged. someone had either propped the door open, or invited someone in that left with them. since it wasn’t us, it had to be the only other people in the building…on the second floor. i asked them about it while my roommate filed a police report. as it turns out, they weren’t home, but one of them had left their son and his friend there with some booze, they got trashed and then decided to take our bikes to go home. he called his son and told him to come over. after talking with him, his son said my bike was too difficult to ride and he had left it somewhere. he didn’t know where. my roommate had his bike returned that day. we worked out an arrangement for my loss, although i never quit looking for my bicycle.
today as i was cooking lunch i received a phone call that i almost didn’t answer. it went a little like this:
me: hello?
guy: jaik?
me: yes?
guy: hi, this is jesse from comrade cycles. i am calling to let you know that we recovered your stolen bike. the khs flite 100.
me: wait. what? which one…the black or purple?(my roommate just had a purple one stolen)
guy: the black one, with the tire stitched on it and the short handlebars.
me: no shit. it’s been two years since i’ve seen that bike. that’s crazy.
guy: yeah, someone came in and it seemed a little shady, so we looked it up. it showed up on stolen bike registry.
me: this is great! i really don’t know what to say…thanks! where are you?
guy: 1908 west chicago, comrade cycles. we’re open until 5 today, but closed tomorrow.
me: no, it’s no problem, i’ll be in there today. i’ll see you in a little while.
guy: okay, see you then.

jesse from comrade cycles, my recovered bike, me!
my roommate and i went into the shop, both so excited to see my bike. my heart was pounding. i was patient and let the other customers go ahead. finally it was my turn, i told them they had called, and that i was there to recover my recovered bike. he went to the back to get it and rolled out my bike. it hadn’t changed. after two years i could only see two things that had been removed. the chain that was locking on the seat, and my u-lock. other than that, visibly it was the same bike. it was a flush of memories.

the story was that this kid had brought the bike in for something, but something didn’t seem right about it. i had stitched a few inches of tire to the frame of the bike to create a bumper when i lock it up. i don’t think this kid knew why it was there, and couldn’t explain it either. i guess the bike had been sitting in a warehouse for almost two years. jesse(the mechanic from comrade cycles) had searched my bike sn after it didn’t feel right with this kid. he found my ad on chicago stolen bike registry and called me. when he told the kid that the bike was stolen and he couldn’t have it, the kid said his dad was a police officer and he wanted it. so his dad was involved. his dad asked for the police report number, which i’m happy to say i had on my c.s.b.r. ad. officer dad said that it was two years ago, and that it had basically been forgotten or something. jesse was kind enough to remind officer dad about the laws of trafficking stolen goods. i think officer dad was just upset about his son getting ripped off on a stolen bike.

the whole period of my bike leaving my loft and ending up in comrade cycles is a mystery to me. i’ll never know exactly where it was and what happened. who had had it, etc. i do know that comrade cycles is about 1.5 miles from where the bike was stolen. the bike didn’t go very far.
there’s some work that needs to be done to it. i need to get my rims trued, i’m going to take better care of it. starting with a nice cleaning. it’s great to have my bicycle back and i thought i would share it with you.

here’s my original chicago stolen bike registry ad.

new route planning

i’ve been working through this. it’s rough. there’s no simple way to send google maps to a garmin. i found a site that does it for you, but you really just have to start fresh with your routes. that’s kind of annoying but at the same time, i’m about halfway through and it’s going great. they’ve got more specific routes for cycling. route planning so far with it has saved me over 100 miles on the half that i’ve completed. i’m even stopping at a few extra places that are only a few miles off my path. i’m also still working on the calendar to show everyone where i’ll be. i can hardly wait to show you everything.

one month

last night i attached my kickstand and deflopinator(actually it’s the velo orange brand, but i really like using the word deflopinator). after attaching them, i washed the bicycle a bit and did a little overhaul on my saddle. i adjusted the brakes, checked tire pressure and made sure all the nuts and bolts were tight. i’m planning on doing this at least a few times a week, some tasks more than others.

also, today marks one month before i’m done with work.

cheezborger, cheezborger, cheezborger

the awolxpoler receives compliments. more than the long haul trucker did, but less than the raleigh twenty. the pugsley gets a bunch of compliments, but i think that’s more of a “wow” factor. ever since i put the cheesburger on the bike people seem to notice more about it. yesterday i got a compliment about the decals all over, then i explained that they weren’t decals, they were part of the paint job. i guess i’m still working out how to take a compliment.

everything is in place for the adventure, although i still need to do more work on the routes. i keep forgetting that they won’t draw themselves. my friend julie emailed and invited a bunch of people over for a bbq in a week or so, and i was really happy to schedule some time to relax. now that i’ve got that some time scheduled i can work hard to get as much done before then. it’s been a rough week trying to do everything with my bruised ribs. jokingly i say they hurt because i’m almost human.

weekend catchup

i had a great time over the weekend. i went with a group to flossmoor and we rode back to chicago. i met quite a few interesting people and created some excellent memories. it was almost 40 miles for just about everyone, but after all the to and from, dinner and etc, my total rounded out to just over 65.

yesterday when i returned home from work, i cut up the case for my luggage. it’s not as bad as it sounds. i have a large case that was free. it needed wheels, and was eight inches larger than the linear limits of the airline. i took off a few from one side, heated it and formed it back together. did the same thing on the other side. it really didn’t look as bad as i expected. measured it and it’s an inch too big. i need to finish my route transfer before i can work on it again. i had to switch to ridewithgps.com because it was becoming increasingly difficult to edit, transfer and convert the maps that i have with my garmin. ridewithgps is so easy to use(not an endorsement) but it’s just time consuming to move the maps there because they all need to be drawn again. flight is booked along with a night in seattle. i’m calling a few campgrounds today because they don’t have web reservations. today i’m also setting up some automation for posting/publicizing my donation site daily until the trip is over.

good start

i’ve started the fundraiser. i’ve received compliments. it’s off to a good start, and i’m happy with how it turned out. today i’ll be emailing out sponsorship letters and arranging places to stay/reserving campsites. last night when i was working on the video i thought “i don’t know when i’ll have time to relax, but if i finish everything sooner i just may have a moment”. i’ve changed the image for this post, because it was a screenshot that a few people thought was a video. this is the shirt that i’ve created for my trip. cut out stencil with light bleach wash.
